    AHCMOM213: Operate and Maintain Chainsaws

    Course Summary

    This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a hand-held chainsaw and maintain it in working condition. This unit applies to cross-cutting fallen timber using safe cutting techniques. The unit applies to individuals who apply low-risk work procedures and comply with worksite health and safety requirements when operating hand-held chainsaws to carry out routine work.

    FWPCOT2273 Trim and cut felled trees and FWPCOT2254 Maintain Chainsaws

    The Unit FWPCOT2273 describes the skills and knowledge required to trim and cut felled trees with a chainsaw and complete operator maintenance. For this unit of competency, a felled tree is any tree or part thereof, including, but not limited to, a tree trunk, branch or limb that has fallen or has been felled and is lying on the ground in a bushland, plantation, forested or other setting, including parkland, roadways and urban areas.  With the exception of minor forest produce, this unit does not apply to commercial harvesting operations.

    The Unit FWPCOT2254 describes the knowledge and skills required to maintain fuel or electrically powered hand-held chainsaws. The unit includes completing routine maintenance service, as well as periodic maintenance servicing and chain sharpening.

    Elements Covered for the two units
    • Prepare for chainsaw maintenance
    • Complete chainsaw maintenance
    • Prepare for trimming and cutting felled trees
    • Assess felled trees visually
    • Use a chainsaw to trim and cut felled trees
    • Complete equipment maintenance
    • Complete maintenance records and clean up

    All attendees are required to wear or have the following:

    • Safety Boots
    • Hi-vis (Preferred)
    • Long pants (or Chainsaw trousers or with Chaps if they have it – Assessor carries Spare Chaps for attendees to use on the course)
    • Safety glasses (assessor carries spares)
    • Safety hat (assessor carries spares)
    • Hearing protection
    • Gloves – optional
    • Water and Lunch

    The assessor will provide a variety of saws and maintenance equipment, as well as chainsaw helmets.
